Kolkata — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday threw down the gauntlet to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, challenging him to conduct state elections immediately and attempt to defeat the Trinamool Congress. She dismissed the Prime Minister’s recent speech as “a bundle of lies.”
Banerjee criticized Modi’s visit to the state, alleging it was timed for political mileage, especially when her party was backing the Centre’s “Operation Sindoor” — a mission against terrorism. She noted that Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee is part of a multi-party opposition delegation currently touring internationally to present a united Indian stance on terrorism.
Mocking the Prime Minister’s changing narratives, Banerjee remarked, “First he said he was a tea seller, then a watchman, and now he claims he will sell sindoor. What will he be next?”
Banerjee questioned the Prime Minister’s attack on the Trinamool government at a time when the state administration is offering full support to national efforts. “You’re criticizing us when Abhishek Banerjee is abroad speaking for the country. The Army deserves the spotlight — not your political stunts,” she said.
Referencing Union ministers’ comments about “Operation Bengal,” Banerjee responded, “If you’re ready, so are we. Let the elections be held — Bengal accepts the challenge.”
She expressed disappointment that Modi used his platform at the Hasimara Air Force base not to commend the armed forces but to target the state government instead. Banerjee also alleged that the BJP was linked to the recent violence in Malda and Murshidabad. “We have evidence,” she asserted, calling the BJP regime a “Jumla government” and accusing it of damaging Bengal’s education system.
Banerjee further criticized the branding of “Operation Sindoor,” suggesting it was designed to draw political attention. “I won’t comment on the name, but this is nothing short of playing ‘political Holi’ in Bengal,” she said.
Defending her state’s track record, Banerjee added, “Women are safe in Bengal. We have ensured social security, and our employment figures are rising.”
Ending on a pointed note, she asked, “Why haven’t you arrested the terrorists? You’re hailed as a global leader, but remain silent when America speaks. All you’re doing is publicity.”
