Gmail is getting smarter. As part of the May feature drop for Google Workspace, Google has introduced AI-powered summary cards in Gmail, designed to streamline the way users engage with long emails and threaded conversations. These new summaries are automatically generated by Gemini, Google’s advanced AI model, and appear at the top of qualifying emails to give users a quick overview without needing to scroll through the entire message.
Previously, users had to manually tap the Gemini icon to generate an email summary. With this update, Gmail will intelligently detect emails that benefit from summarization and display a collapsible summary card by default. As email threads evolve, Gemini will refresh the summaries in real time to reflect the latest updates.
Gemini Enhancements Extend Beyond Gmail
The AI enhancements aren’t limited to Gmail. Google Chat now features Gemini-powered message summaries in the home view, helping users prioritize conversations across English, Spanish, and six additional languages.
In Google Docs and Slides, Gemini can generate summaries of shared files, visible in the side panel even before opening the document. Docs is also getting a new “summary building block” feature—allowing users to insert AI-generated overviews directly at the top of their documents. These summaries dynamically update as edits are made, keeping collaborators aligned with the latest content.
Smarter Meet Layouts and Expanded Language Support
Google Meet also sees a visual upgrade with new dynamic layout options. Users can now choose between “room” tiles—ideal for shared devices—and “individual” tiles that highlight a single participant, enhancing visibility in hybrid settings.
Meanwhile, Gmail’s “Help Me Write” tool is expanding its language support, making it easier for global teams to benefit from AI-assisted writing.
With these updates, Google continues its push to embed AI across its Workspace suite, making everyday tasks faster, more intuitive, and more collaborative.
