Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Thane-Palghar district chief Avinash Jadhav was detained by police early Tuesday morning, just hours before he was set to lead a counter-rally in Mira-Bhayander, opposing a protest by local traders over a recent Marathi language-related incident.

Rally Denied Permission, Section 144 Enforced

Police had earlier denied permission for the rally organized by MNS and the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti in Mira-Bhayander, citing law and order concerns.
On Monday, an official order was issued restricting Jadhav’s entry into the Mira-Bhayander area.

“Avinash Jadhav was taken into custody from his residence in Thane around 3:30 AM,”
a senior official from the Thane police control room confirmed.

The Raj Thackeray-led MNS also released a video of Jadhav’s detention on social media, criticizing the move.

Background: Language Controversy Sparks Tensions

Last week, a food stall owner in Bhayander was allegedly slapped by MNS activists for not speaking in Marathi. The incident triggered a backlash from local traders, who staged a protest and demanded action against the accused.

Seven MNS members were detained following the incident but were later released after being served legal notices.

Heavy Police Presence in Mira-Bhayander

Following Jadhav’s detention and the cancellation of the proposed rally, police presence was significantly increased across the Mira-Bhayander area to avoid any potential unrest. Section 144 was reportedly imposed to prohibit unlawful assemblies

The situation has once again highlighted the sensitive nature of linguistic identity politics in Maharashtra. While the MNS has maintained its pro-Marathi stance, opposition groups and civil society are calling for restraint and legal due process.
